| So, yeah, I was in Indigo today trying to decide how to spend my $100 gift card, and I came across the hoshi no koe manga ("Voices of a Distant Star") and I saw the anime last semester, and it was awesome but for the faces, which were weeeird, and the cover art for this manga is also awesome, in not-at-all-the-way-you're-expecting. It's what watercolours were meant to do, man. And it's cool how her hair and tie get all stretched-out on one side; it's relevant because space-time gets all freaky for her in the story. ... the anime was done by Shinkai Makoto and his girlfriend, and nobody else. Two people. A whole big movie, two people. ....... /dies |

^ ^ My standard reply to "what is xxxxx about" is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki /xxxxx
So: .... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voices_of_a_Distant_Star
I heart wikipedia <3 <3
The reason we watched it in our anime course last semester is that it's a new spin on/new direction for the mecha genre, and it's awesome because this time finally it's the girl who goes off to fight in the war, and the dude who sits moping at home waiting for letters from the front. The catch is that since she goes off into hyperspace and stuff, the txtmsgs (yep, it's all about the cellphones in the future) take longer and longer to reach Earth. When the girl sends them, her phone says "estimated time to arrival on Earth: 8 yrs 7 months 3 days"
I don't think it's fun for anyone to have to wait for letters, but I'm happy that finally the girl does the awesome, active stuff.
Our teacher also made an interesting remark on how the last line in (almost) any given mecha series is always by the main character, and is something along the lines of "I finally have somewhere to belong" / "I'm finally home" / "I am allowed to exist here" (Shinji XD ) / and this movie has a similar line, but with a little twist, and after the anime course was over, I watched the Transformers movie, and the last line of the film was TOTALLY "We are here, we are waiting" - but the twist this time is that it was the mecha saying it, not the pilot (I guess since transformers don't have human pilots, sort of). I told the teacher about this revelation (thinking he would be pleased that at least someone was paying attention during his lectures, and had found that what he was saying was relevant beyond the classroom) and there wasn't even a look of recognition or anything. > : P |

I watched the anime, and it was so awesome. From what I remember, the ending was a bit bittersweet (or am I thinking of another Makoto Shinkai work?) and the background art was beautiful.

I found that they were always changing shapes. @__@. They weren't that terrible though. I believe that the only reason why they bothered me so much was because they looked ugly compared to the awesome awesome background. |

I have both the movie and the Manga that was based on the work (Voices of a Distant Star). The reason the movie didn't come out stellar is mostly because it was a solo work. The author animated it entirely by himself. In the DVD comes another movie he did, also by himself (minus the score and voice acting, done by a friend).
Very interesting about the mecha final line thing... I'm curious to see if Gurren Lagann follows suit with this? |

| I had a dream last night that I was in some second hand book market and I found a book called Gurren Lagann and it was by some Medieval Church father; I think it was Bede or something. It was totally an old, dusty tome (paperback though) and I was all "oh, so they're making a reference to this" but I woke up before I could buy it or even look inside. |

Wow. Awesome dream.....
I dreamt we were hanging out with Matt Bellamy and the dudes from Muse (the band, no relation to the Basement :P).... like in someone's living room... and Matt Bellamy picked up an acoustic guitar and I started singing. It was Tracy Chapman's 'Fast Car'.... |

I had a dream that I got kidnapped. I escaped and started freaking out because I was late for school. >__>
Did you guys ever watch "Beyond the Clouds, the Promised Land" by Shinkai Makoto? It was a bit odd, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

um - anyone have an explanation for how this thread got 564 views?
Do we all check back a lot to see if there are new replies, or do we just have a huge fan base?
